Microplastics in Textiles: Adressing the Challenges for Politics, Industry and Research

On 10 December 2019, BSI, FESI - and WWF Germany are organising a joint policy event in Brussels, where first results of the TextileMission project will be presented by its partner organisations. The event also aims to stimulate further European wide research, in order to initiate additional EU project funding for the synthetic related microplastic problem.

The sporting goods industry is one of the major producers of synthetic apparel world-wide and thus one of the actors responsible for the current environmental textile-based microplastic pollution. Therefore, the sporting goods industry is committed to find solutions for the reduction for the polyester-based microplastic-shedding.

In Germany the Federation of the German Sporting Goods Industry (BSI) together with its partners has initiated TextileMission as a project on the reduction of the textile-based microplastic shedding, addressing textile research on the improvement of fabrics and processes as well as the understanding and amelioration of the household washing conditions. First results on textile research und further solutions (e.g. bio-based alternative fibers) are being presented during this event.

Central topics will be:

  • Causes and extent of microplastic loss in textiles
  • EU research agenda on plastic waste
  • Panel discussion on research policy priorities and Q&A
